As each of her stories evokes its own universe, Maria de Bueil adapts her visual language too. She finds new graphical solutions as she explores the ways to reveal different atmospheres in which her characters live. Watercolours, ink, collage or block printing, Maria gives preference exclusively to techniques which require the involvement of her hands.

Personal Project

A mixed technique of watercolour, watercolour pencils and Arches hot press paper.
“Inspired by a fresco-like surface of the hot press Arches paper I wanted these images to emerge in a very organic manner, as if they were paintings on a rock, not unlike the paintings of the Lascaux caves.”
~ Maria de Bueil
The Day My Hair Got Too Long
Ink on Arches Paper
Work in progress on a book about a girl who refused to cut her hair and how sometimes facing your fears can lead to exciting new experiences.
“Inspired by the drawings on the vases of Ancient Greece I wanted to achieve lightness and spontaneity. Working simultaneously on several versions of the same scene made it possible to relax and just enjoy the process.”
~ Maria de Bueil

A set of watercolour character designs

“The fun part of being an artist is that you get to doodle a lot, it’s part of my daily life. It’s the time when ideas are born and when I can test new materials without being constrained by deadlines and specific projects.”
~ Maria de Bueil
